ARCHITECTS OF AIR

Since 1990 Architects of Air have exhibited in 25 countries on 5 continents. Luminaria are exhibited in a range of context: arts festival, theatre festival, science festival and often as exhibits in their own right.

Alan Parkinson has been building luminaria since 1985. ’What first engaged me is the subtle yet astonishing beauty of the light and colour that is intrinsic to this medium. I am interested to present this experience in an architecture that is designed to enhance the sense of wonder. For inspiration I turn to cathedral and mosque architecture as well as more contemporary influences such as Buckminster Fuller and Frei Otto. I draw on natural forms and geometric solids to develop new pneumatic shapes.’

Amococo is the latest luminarium to be designed. It is an intricate exploration of light and form that takes its inspiration from Islamic architecture. It is made up of over 60 triangular domes which create a wandering path similar to the experience of the bazaar. Where paths meet there is a mosque-like dome. This structure also features a triple-dome based on a soap-bubble formation which allows a large open space beneath shimmering reflecting panels. It is specifically designed for smaller sites. Each luminarium is a one-off. For more information go to the Amococo page
