rawcus

“In a few short years, Melbourne company Rawcus has produced a small body of work of an outstanding quality which, for me, ranks among the most exciting of the moment” - John Bailey, Real Time 2007

rawcus is an ensemble of performers with and without disabilities. Collaborating with a core creative team to devise new work that gives a voice to the imaginative world of the ensemble, their work is crafted with a precision that supports the performers while allowing space for their inherent sense of anarchy. A series of moving pictures, rawcus’ work is sculptural, unexpected, beautiful, funny and tender. rawcus has collaborated with companies such as Restless Dance Company, Born in a Taxi and the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra and have presented work as part of the Next Wave Festival, Melbourne Fringe and the Melbourne International Arts Festival.

rawcus is underpinned by an artistic philosophy which:

  • Embraces collaboration, imagination, the intangible and the unexpected
  • Invests in long-term relationships with ensemble members to support their continued creative development across a range of projects.
  • Celebrates humanity and diversity
  • Is interested in finding the epic, the universal in the most personal of stories
  • Is committed to creating opportunities for artists with disabilities to develop their arts practice.

Insite Arts is working with rawcus to produce the company’s new work, Small Odysseys, which will make it’s world premiere at Arts House in July 2011.
