inDevelopment Project

After Party is a new installation dance work that celebrates the embodied knowledge of retired ballet dancers.

After Party aims to demystify our understanding of classical dance. Unfolding across a custom concertina arrangement of screens designed by Nick Roux, the work is a celebration of the embodied knowledge and beauty of our dance elders.

Created by Yuiko Masukawa with filmmaker Sam Mcgilp, After Party is performed by a diverse cast of retired principal ballet dancers who have reached the pinnacle of achievement in their practise, with major ballet companies.

The cast features renowned dancers in the recent history of Australian ballet - Damien Welch, Kirsty Welch, Jiayin Du, Damian Smith and Natasha Middelton, who are known to classical dance audiences and will elicit engagement with them.

Bringing the iconoclastic and inclusive ethos of contemporary practice to the classical form, After Party showcases the beauty of ballet movement outside of the homogeneous mould of thin, young ballerinas.
