Exploring the universe of us
Wonder is a 40-minute piece of dance-theatre work for - and most especially with - children aged 3 years and younger, including babies.
That, then, is loveliness, we said,
Children in wonder watching the stars is the aim and the end.
Dylan Thomas
Wonder is inspired by young children’s capacity for deep, intense wondering.
We began with the words 'twinkle twinkle little star, how I wonder what you are'. Perhaps the most well known children’s song in the Western world. The work has developed to become an artistic exploration of the beauty of light, the vast-ness of the stars and the inter-connectedness of all of us in a wide and wondrous universe.
The development of Wonder took place in two Family Dance Labs held in Adelaide and in Mount Gambier in March 2021. The word 'Lab' may sound a bit scientific, but all we mean is that everyone involved - six artists and 22 families across both locations - took part in trial, observation, repetition and the consideration of possibilities, all through dance and live music. Sally Chance Dance Labs are joyful and exploratory. We could easily replace the words trial with play, observation with connection and repetition with enjoyment!
Wonder is a Sally Chance Dance project presented in association with Insite Arts, The PaperBoats Partnerships and Co-Creation Platform and Country Arts South Australia.
